Member Benefits

Do people look at you strangely because you’re engaged in imaginary conversation? Do you jump from bed at odd hours, inspired by a dream that must be written down before it fades with the morning light? Do you hide yourself in your personal writing space and forget what time it is?

You’re not alone.

Writing often seems like a solitary endeavor, but in the Black Hills Writers’ Group, we recognize the difficulties and loneliness inherent in the writing lifestyle. We know you have voices in your head and that you eavesdrop on interesting conversations. We understand why you cheer at a rejection letter one minute and then mope for the rest of the day. We’ve been there. One of our main goals at BHWG is to provide support, motivation, and camaraderie for fellow writers. For many of us, membership in the BHWG is necessary to our sanity!

Because we have both amateur and professional writers in our group, there is always someone who can offer assistance and share his or her experience. Some members have created sub-groups for feedback and accountability. At our meetings each month, we choose two prompts as an optional writing exercise to inspire you and keep your creative juices flowing. Members also receive discounted rates to workshops and conferences and access to our webloop for mid-month news.
Guests are always welcome at our meetings. We encourage you to attend one meeting free of charge to determine if BHWG is a match for you. If you agree with us about the benefits of membership, our dues are $24/year, payable on the second visit.

We meet the fourth Tuesday of every month, except December, in the Third Floor West Conference Room of the City-School Administration Building, 300 6th Street, Rapid City. The meeting begins at 6:45 pm with an open forum of sharing and reading, followed by a business meeting which guests may attend or not. When the meeting adjourns around 9 pm, we often relocate to a restaurant for a more informal get-together. We’d love to have you join us.
